Removal

CAUTION:

The final tightening of the suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle on its wheels.

NOTES:

  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • Steps 6 to 14 must be performed to the components on both sides of the vehicle.

All vehicles

Uni-body, subframe and mounting system front subframe (G2028440) - Removal

Release the drivers footwell carpet.

CAUTION:

Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate once the steering column is disconnected.

Disconnect the lower steering column from the steering gear.

Discard the bolt.

Remove the steering gear bulkhead seal. Discard the nuts.

Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

Refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

Remove the engine undershield.

Refer to: Engine Undershield (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).

Remove the front wheels and tires.

Refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

Remove the suspension height sensors.

Refer to: Front Suspension Height Sensor (204-05 Vehicle Dynamic Suspension, Removal and Installation).

  1. Release the front wheel arch liner.
  2. Disconnect the tire pressure monitor sensor.

CAUTION:

Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

Disconnect the front stabilizer bar link lower ball joint. Discard the nut.

CAUTION:

Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

Loosen the tie rod end to wheel knuckle nut

CAUTION:

Make sure that the ball joint seal is not damaged.

Using the special tool, disconnect the tie rod end. Discard the nut.

CAUTION:

Support the brake caliper at all times.

Disconnect the brake caliper. Discard the bolts.

Remove and discard the suspension lower control arm ball joint nut and bolt.

Disconnect the suspension lower control arm ball joint.

Remove the front bumper tow eye cover.

Remove the front bumper lower retaining bolts.

NOTE:

If equipped.

Disconnect the transmission steady bar.

Disconnect the engine steady bar.

Disconnect and release the steering gear wiring harness.

  1. Disconnect the exhaust sensor wiring harness.
  2. Remove the exhaust sensor wiring harness bracket.

Release the front exhaust hangers.

Vehicles with diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Disconnect and release the DPF sensor wiring harness.

All vehicles

Uni-body, subframe and mounting system front subframe (G2028440) - Removal

Using a suitable stand, support the front subframe.

General Equipment: Transmission jack

Remove the front subframe to body cross member. Discard the M16 bolts.

Remove and discard the front subframe front retaining bolts.

Reposition the front bumper.

NOTE:

Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Remove the front subframe.

Remove the suspension lower control arm. Discard the nuts and bolts.

Remove the stabilizer bar.

  1. Release the steering gear wiring harness.
  2. Remove the exhaust hanger bracket.

Remove the steering gear.

Remove the noise, vibration and harshness damper.
