GENERAL EQUIPMENT

REMOVAL

NOTES:

  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

  2. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: Specifications (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Specifications).

  3. Remove the exhaust system.

    Refer to: Exhaust System (309-00C Exhaust System - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Diesel, Removal and Installation).

    Refer to: Exhaust System (309-00A Exhaust System - GTDi 2.0L Petrol/GTDi 2.0L Petrol - SULEV, Removal and Installation).

  4. Remove the left rear halfshaft.

    Refer to: Rear Left Halfshaft (205-05 Rear Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

  1. Remove the heatshield.

CAUTION:

Make sure that the driveshaft is supported with suitable retaining straps.

  1. Release the driveshaft cross brace.
  2. Disconnect the rear driveshaft from the rear differential.

    Refer to: Driveshaft to Rear Differential Disconnection (205-00 Driveline System - General Information, General Procedures).

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  1. Remove the breather.

  1. Using a transmission jack, support the differential case.

    General Equipment: Transmission jack

  2. Remove and discard the rear differential rear training bolts.

  1. Release the halfshaft.
  2. Remove the rear differential. Discard the retaining bolts.

NOTE:

Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Remove the differential support insulator. Discard the bolts.

Remove and discard the lower 2 active on-demand coupling bolts.

CAUTION:

Be prepared to collect escaping oil.

Remove active on-demand coupling. Discard the bolts and seal.

INSTALLATION

Locate the oil way prior to the next step.

WARNING:

Make sure that the area around the oil way is covered by suitable absorbent cloth.

Using a suitable compressed air tool, blow the oil way in the highlighted order clear of any water and debris prior to installation of the active on-demand coupling.

CAUTIONS:

  • Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of foreign material.
  • Lubricate the O-ring seals.
  • Only use the specified material to lubricate the seals.

Install active on-demand coupling. Renew the bolts and seal.

Torque: 29 Nm

  1. Install the differential support insulator. Renew the bolts.

Torque: 29 Nm

CAUTION:

Take care not to damage the halfshaft seal.

Using a transmission jack, install the rear differential. Renew the bolts.

Torque:

Front retaining bolts 175 Nm

Rear retaining bolts 110 Nm

Install the breather.

Connect the electrical connector.

CAUTION:

The component must be aligned with the installation markings.

NOTE:

Tighten the retaining bolts working diagonally.

Connect the rear driveshaft to the rear differential. Renew the bolts.

Torque: 40 Nm

Secure the driveshaft cross brace.

Torque: 24 Nm

Install the heatshield.

Torque: 10 Nm

Install the halfshaft.

Refer to: Rear Left Halfshaft (205-05 Rear Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Install the exhaust system.

Refer to: Exhaust System (309-00C Exhaust System - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Diesel, Removal and Installation).

Refer to: Exhaust System (309-00A Exhaust System - GTDi 2.0L Petrol/GTDi 2.0L Petrol - SULEV, Removal and Installation).

Check and top-up the active on-demand coupling fluid level.

Refer to: Active On-Demand Coupling Filling (205-02A Rear Drive Axle/Differential - Vehicles Without: Active Driveline, General Procedures).

Fill the differential case with fluid.

Refer to: Differential Draining and Filling (205-02A Rear Drive Axle/Differential - Vehicles Without: Active Driveline, General Procedures).

Connect the startup battery ground cable.

Refer to: Specifications (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Specifications).
