Land Rover Discovery: Rear end Sheet Metal Repairs Rear Bumper Retaining Rail (G1770947) / Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

NOTE:

The rear bumper retaining rail is installed in conjunction with:

• Rear bumper cover
• Rear bumper

1. The rear bumper retaining rail is serviced as indicated.
2. Before commencing this procedure make sure that you are aware of all Health and Safety requirements.

   Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00, Description and Operation).

3. For further information on the methods, tools and fixings used in this procedure refer to the body repairs - general information section.

NOTES:

• Any joints sealed as part of vehicle manufacture must be sealed as part of the repair.
• Make sure a zinc rich primer is applied to any bare metal surfaces.

4. Refer to: Rear Bumper Cover (501-19, Removal and Installation).
5. Refer to: Rear Bumper (501-19, Removal and Installation).

6. Remove the spot welds as indicated.
7. Carefully separate the joints and remove the panel.

NOTES:

• Any joints sealed as part of vehicle manufacture must be sealed as part of the repair.
• Make sure a zinc rich primer is applied to any bare metal surfaces.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:

Breakstem fastener (BSF) installation involves using the Land Rover approved BSF installation tool and requires a hole diameter of 6.5mm.

1. Dress the flanges where necessary.

2. Drill holes in the new bumper retaining rail where the BSF's are to be installed as indicated.
3. Offer up the new rear bumper retaining rail and clamp into position.

   Check alignment, if correct, proceed to next step, if not, rectify and recheck before proceeding.

4. Drill holes in the back panel outer where the BSF's are to be installed as indicated.
5. Remove the bumper retaining rail.
6. Deburr the drilled holes.
7. Clean and prepare the panel surfaces.

NOTE:

Make sure a continuous bead of sealer surrounds fixing holes.

8. Apply a 5mm bead of Land Rover approved to the rear bumper retaining rail as indicated.
9. Offer up the new rear bumper retaining rail and clamp into position.

   Check alignment, if correct, proceed to next step, if not, rectify and recheck before proceeding.

10. Install the BSF's as indicated.
11. Make sure that any open or exposed panel joints are correctly sealed.
12. Make sure corrosion protection is applied to all areas affected by repair.
13. The installation of associated panels and components is the reversal of removal procedure.
