REMOVAL

CAUTION:

Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

NOTES:

  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: Specifications (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Specifications).

  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post ramp.

    Refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

NOTE:

Before disconnecting any components of the active driveline hydraulic system, the two pipe port closing valve must be closed manually as illustrated.

Rear drive axle_differential - vehicles with- active driveline differential case (G1781298) - Removal

Close the port valves.

Vehicles with petrol engine

Remove the exhaust system.

Refer to: Rear Silencer (309-00C Exhaust System - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Diesel, Removal and Installation).

Vehicles with diesel engine

Remove the rear silencer.

Refer to: Rear Silencer (309-00C Exhaust System - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Diesel, Removal and Installation).

All vehicles

Remove the rear halfshafts.

Refer to: Rear Left Halfshaft (205-05 Rear Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Refer to: Rear Right Halfshaft (205-05 Rear Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Rear drive axle_differential - vehicles with- active driveline differential case (G1781298) - Removal

Remove the Rear Drive Unit (RDU) to Power Transfer Unit (PTU) hydraulic pipe support bracket.

Remove the heatshield.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

CAUTION:

Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.

Rear drive axle_differential - vehicles with- active driveline differential case (G1781298) - Removal

Disconnect the PTU hydraulic fluid feed pipes.

CAUTION:

Make sure the openings are sealed.

Remove the pipe unions.

CAUTION:

To avoid damage to the joint or gaiter, do not allow the driveshaft to hang.

NOTE:

Mark the position of the driveshaft flange in relation to the drive pinion flange damper.

Remove and discard the driveshaft retaining bolts and washers.

Position a suitable transmission jack to support the differential case.

Remove the RDU retaining bolts.

Remove the RDU support bracket.

Disconnect the rear driveshaft from the rear differential.

Refer to: Driveshaft to Rear Differential Disconnection (205-00 Driveline System - General Information, General Procedures).

Remove the RDU retaining bolts.

Disconnect the RDU breather.

NOTE:

Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

  1. Remove the bolt.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector
  3. Remove the RDU wiring harness.

  1. Remove the RDU Electronic Control Module (ECM) retaining bolts.
  2. Remove the RDU ECM.
