Land Rover Discovery: Transmission Fluid Drain and
Refill (G1660818)
/ General Procedures
GENERAL EQUIPMENT
PART(S)
DRAINING
WARNINGS:
- Be prepared to collect escaping fluids.
- Observe due care when draining, as the fluid can be very hot.
CAUTIONS:
- Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of
foreign material.
- Vehicle must be horizontal during this operation.
- Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean
and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings
must be sealed
NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations
depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential
information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components
removed to provide extra clarity.
- The following steps must be observed before starting the
transmission drain and refill.
- Make sure that the electric park brake (EPB) is applied.
- Make sure the transmission control switch (TCS) is in the
Park (P) position.
- Do not start the engine.
Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and
Operation).
Remove the front left wheel and tire.
Refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and
Installation).
Remove the engine undershield.
Refer to: Engine Undershield (501-02 Front End Body Panels,
Removal and Installation).
CAUTION:
The ambient temperature should not be below 20 degrees
celsius.
Remove and discard the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain until
the flow stops.
Renew Part: Transfer case drain plug.
Install a new transmission fluid drain plug.
Torque: 35 Nm
- Remove the transmission fluid level plug, do not discard.
Fill the transmission with 3.5 litres of the correct
specification oil through transmission fluid level plug hole
using a suitable syringe.
Refer to: Specifications (307-01 Automatic
Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications).
General Equipment: Oil syringe
Allow the transmission fluid to drain from the transmission
fluid level plug hole until the flow almost stops to a trickle.
Install the original transmission fluid level plug.
Torque: 35 Nm
CAUTION:
Using Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, make sure
the transmission temperature is between 35ºC (95ºF) 45ºC
(113ºF) before starting the fluid level check
- The following steps must be observed before starting the
transmission fluid level check.
- Connect Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment to
vehicle.
General Equipment: Land Rover diagnostic equipment
- Start the engine and allow to idle.
- Switch off the air conditioning (A/C) system and other electrical
components.
- Make sure that the transmission is not in the default mode, if
this is the case, stop and correct the cause first and then restart
the fluid level check.
CAUTION:
Make sure the hydraulic control system is filled with oil.
- Apply and hold the brake pedal.
- Select reverse gear and wait for 10 seconds.
- Select drive, then manual 1st gear and wait for 10 seconds.
- Select 2nd gear and wait for 10 seconds.
- Select Park (P) on the TCS.
CAUTION:
Make sure the park position is selected before carrying out
the transmission hydraulic system fill process.
NOTE:
Make sure the transmission hydraulic system is completely
filled with oil.
NOTE:
After completing the preparation, proceed to the actual
transmission fluid level check.
CAUTION:
Only continue with the fluid level check if the transmission
temperature is between 35ºC (95ºF) 45ºC (113ºF).
- Start the engine, if not already idling.
- Maintain the engine idle speed.
CAUTION:
Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
- Remove the transmission fluid level plug, do not discard.
CAUTION:
Transmission fluid temperature must not exceed 45 degrees
celsius.
NOTE:
With the engine running a small amount of automatic
transmission fluid should trickle out of the transmission fluid
level plug hole.
- If fluid flows out, proceed to step 19.
- If fluid does not flow out, proceed to step 18.
- If the transmission fluid does not come out of the
transmission fluid level plug hole the transmission fluid level
is insufficient. If this is the case add the transmission fluid in
100 millilitre units into the transmission fluid level plug hole
using a suitable syringe.
General Equipment: Oil syringe

Switch off the engine.
Remove the container.
Install the engine undershield.
